Etsy now bans AI-made patterns, recipes and instructions: what pattern and printable sellers must change, and what AI use is still allowed

On 22 October Etsy banned AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructions, banned bot-made listings and asked for one unedited photo of the real item. A checklist for pattern, recipe and printable sellers: what is at risk, what to fix first, and what AI use is still fine.

AI-assisted

On 22 October 2026 Etsy published an update to its AI rules that lands hardest on one group of sellers: people who sell patterns, recipes, plans and other instructions. In the announcement, James Ossman, Etsy's VP of Customer Operations, sets out two principles: AI should support creativity and craftsmanship, not replace them, and buyers should always be able to understand the role you play in every item you sell.

The rules behind those principles are short. If you sell knitting charts, sewing patterns, recipe cards or woodworking plans, here is what changed, what is still allowed, and a checklist to work through this week.

What is now banned

  • AI-generated functional guides. Etsy's announcement names patterns, recipes and instructions. Value Added Resource, which went through the updated Seller Handbook article, lists what that covers: knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading patterns; recipes; woodworking and construction plans; and instruction manuals or similar guides to doing a task. The instructions have to be your own original work.
  • Bot-generated listings. Listings created entirely by a bot, or mass-produced automatically without a person looking at each one, are out.
  • AI prompt bundles were already restricted in 2024; that has not changed.

Etsy's reason for singling out functional products is practical: a pattern or recipe has to produce a result, and AI-written instructions can contain errors a buyer only finds after spending time and materials. That matches the complaint that kept coming up from crochet buyers, who paid for AI patterns that could not make the item in the photo.

Original, human-written instructions are now required for functional guides.

The new photo rule

Every listing must now include at least one unedited photo of the actual item, shot against a real background. All photos must accurately show what the buyer will receive. According to Value Added Resource's reading of the handbook:

Listings for recipes now require an unedited photo of the finished result.
Listings for recipes now require an unedited photo of the finished result.
  • On that one photo, cropping, resizing, straightening, lighting or exposure changes and background edits are not allowed.
  • Pattern, recipe and seed listings need at least one real, unedited photo of a finished result: the knitted hat, the baked loaf, the built shelf.
  • There are exceptions for some print-on-demand products, for digital downloads (which need previews or excerpts instead) and for custom or made-to-order items.

Your other listing photos can still be edited, including with AI, as long as they show the item accurately.

What AI use is still allowed

  • AI art and similar digital products, if you play a clear role in making them and are open about using AI. Do not present the work as entirely handmade or entirely your own.
  • AI edits on your additional photos, if they still represent the item accurately. Disclosing AI-assisted photo editing is recommended but not required.
  • Representative images for digital products with nothing to photograph, such as audio files, as long as they do not mislead.
  • Authorised stock mockups for print-on-demand items made by production partners.

What the rules do not ban is using AI around your own work: tidying the wording of a listing description you wrote, translating your own instructions, or checking your maths. The line Etsy draws is that the instructions themselves must be yours. If AI wrote the pattern, it cannot be sold.

AI-generated art remains permitted provided the seller is transparent about its creation.

When it applies, and how it is enforced

Etsy's announcement gives no effective date, and Value Added Resource notes there is no deadline or grace period for fixing existing listings. Treat it as in force now. Here is what Etsy has said about enforcement:

  • Etsy is building tools to spot misleading images and fraudulent listings and plans to remove more listings over the coming months.
  • Buyers get a new option to report listings they think use AI imagery misleadingly. In Etsy's words, at first reports will help it understand members' concerns and won't trigger immediate enforcement.
  • Per Value Added Resource: the listing form will warn you when it detects AI images at upload, with plans to extend that to existing listings; misleading listings can be removed; repeated violations can lead to further action up to shop removal; and buyers whose item is materially different can open cases that may end in a refund.
  • Appeals go through the Policy Violations page in Shop Manager.

The quiet start for buyer reports is your window. The reports are collected now, and detection is getting stronger, so a listing that slips through today may not slip through in January.

The checklist for pattern, recipe and printable shops

  1. Export your listings (Shop Manager, Settings, Options, Download Data) and sort them into three groups: functional guides (patterns, recipes, plans, instructions), other digital items (art, planners, printables without instructions) and physical items.
  2. For every functional guide, ask one question: did I write these instructions? If AI drafted the steps and you only edited them, Etsy's rule says the instructions must be your original work. Rewrite and test them yourself, or deactivate the listing. Deactivating is reversible; a removal and a strike on your shop are not.
  3. Add a real finished-result photo to every pattern, recipe and seed listing: the item you made from your own instructions, on a real surface, straight off the camera with no crop or colour fix. If you have never made it, that is a sign to make it before you keep selling it.
  4. Keep your test records. Save your working notes, swatches, test-bake photos and earlier versions with dates. Etsy has not said what proof appeals will accept, but dated drafts and photos of your own test runs are the strongest evidence you can have ready.
  5. For AI art and printables, write a plain disclosure in the description: what you did (concept, editing, layout) and what the AI tool did. Remove any wording that calls the piece entirely handmade or hand-drawn.
  6. Stop any bulk listing tool that creates listings without you reviewing each one. Tools that help you fill in fields are fine; a pipeline that publishes listings nobody looked at is what the ban targets.
  7. Check your physical items too. Every listing needs one unedited photo of the real item on a real background, even if you never touch AI. If your main photos are all edited or styled mockups, shoot one plain photo per listing.
  8. Read the Seller Handbook article linked from the announcement before you change anything big. It holds the full list of exceptions, and Etsy may update it as enforcement starts.

What is still unclear

Some questions are still open. Etsy has not said how it will tell a deliberate edit from the automatic processing phones apply to every photo, how it will separate banned AI instructions from allowed AI art when reviewing a report, or what its planned authorship-verification tools will check. Value Added Resource also points out that Etsy's automated takedowns have had a mixed record, so expect some mistakes and keep your evidence ready.

The safe reading for now: if a buyer follows your steps, the steps should be yours, tested by you, with a photo of the result to prove it.
